How To Choose Sunscreen

By kep2020 June 17, 2025

If you want to prevent sunburns, premature aging and skin cancer, then you need sunscreen! But which one is right for you? With countless options available, it’s important to know what to look for in order to select the best product for your skin type and lifestyle. Here’s how to choose a sunscreen that offers effective protection while working with your skin to keep it healthy.

Broad Spectrum Protection

Choose a sunscreen that’s labeled broad spectrum to shield against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause premature aging like sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles. UVB rays cause sunburn and can increase your risk for skin cancer. A broad spectrum formula will provide protection against all the harmful effects of the sun.

SPF 30 or Higher

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) indicates how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which effectively blocks 97% of UVB rays. If you plan on spending extended time outside, consider a higher SPF for added protection.

Water Resistance

If you plan on swimming or engaging in an activity that will make you sweat, opt for a water resistant sunscreen. Keep in mind that water resistant is not waterproof. A water resistant formula will maintain its SPF protection level for up to 80 minutes, so you should reapply sunscreen after swimming, sweating, or using a towel since this can rub it off.

Your Skin Type

Those who have sensitive skin may want to choose a sunscreen that uses a mineral filter. Ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide create a physical barrier on top of the skin, making them less likely to cause irritation. However, mineral formulas tend to be thicker and therefore more difficult to rub in. Another option is chemical sunscreen, which is lighter and easier to apply, but may cause sensitivity due to certain ingredients. For those with oily or acne-prone skin, look for oil-free or non-comedogenic formulas. For people with dry skin, select a sunscreen that has moisturizing ingredients.
