What is an Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon?
Many patients come to the office questioning whether all plastic surgeons are the same, wondering, what distinguishes the oculofacial plastic surgeon from the rest.
There are fewer than 600 oculofacial plastic surgeons worldwide (not a lot) who are fellows of the American Society of Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery Society (ASOPRS), the certifying body. Membership requires passing both written and oral exams as well an original thesis dealing with a topic within the specialty.
After becoming a board certified eye surgeon, an oculofacial plastic surgeon does fellowship training that focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery solely of the eyelid, eyebrow, face, orbit and tear drainage system (lacrimal).
