Summer Skincare Tips
Summer means days spent outdoors soaking up the sun, but that can be challenging for your skin. Between the increased heat, humidity and sun exposure, your skin can feel like it’s barely keeping up. To help you maintain a healthy, glowing complexion during the warmest months, keep these summer skincare tips in mind.
Wear Sunscreen Daily
The most important step in summer skincare (and really, any season) is sun protection. UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days, so applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily is crucial. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating so your protection lasts.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Hot weather can cause your skin to lose moisture, leading to dryness and irritation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside. Switch to a hydrating moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to lock in moisture. Opt for lighter, oil-free formulas if you have oily skin.
Exfoliate Gently
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and helps prevent clogged pores, which can be more common in the summer due to sweat and sunscreen buildup. Gentle exfoliation is the key though, as aggressive scrubbing can irritate your skin. Use a mild exfoliant with natural exfoliants like AHA or BHA for smoother, glowing skin.
Protect Your Lips
The skin on your lips needs protection too! Apply an SPF lip balm to keep your lips from drying out or getting sunburned. Look for balms with nourishing ingredients like shea butter or vitamin E to pump up the hydration and your pout.
Keep Your Skin Cool
The summer heat can leave your skin feeling flushed or overheated, leading to redness. Stay cool by using refreshing facial mists, a fan or a cool compress to calm your skin. Avoid hot showers since they can strip your skin of essential oils. Instead, use lukewarm water and follow up with a moisturizer.
